WHAT IS DELTA-8?
What is Delta 8 THC?
Everybody wants to know, what is Delta 8 THC? Delta 8 THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of the natural occurring cannabinoids in the cannabis cannabinoid spectrum. Hemp and marijuana have over 112 confirmed cannabinoids, with Delta 8 THC commonly abbreviated as: D8THC, Δ8THC, Δ8, D8, D8 THC, and Delta 8 THC.
Delta 8 THC is an isomer of both CBD and Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol–the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. An isomer means each of two or more compounds (CBD and Delta 9 THC) with the same formula but a different arrangement of atoms in the molecule and different properties. That is to say, Delta 8 THC has the same arrangement of atoms in its molecules but produces slightly different properties.

The Importance of D8 THC
What makes Delta 8 THC so important? The simple yet profound truth is Delta 8 THC is an extremely important cannabinoid due to its ability to serve as a more functional substitute to Delta 9 THC. In other words, Delta 8 THC is able to mimic the benefits of Delta 9 THC without the dysfunctional psychoactive effects.
Some of the dysfunction and psychoactive effects of Delta 9 THC are associated with: anxiety, paranoia, sleep problems, laziness and in some cases additive behavior. Delta 8 THC produces none of these effects in comparison, or at the very least, rarely and far less severely in comparison. Delta 8 THC, thus becomes the perfect alternative to those seeking the medicinal benefits of Delta 9 THC but without the inhibiting side effects.
Legalities of D8 THC
Perhaps the most common question we receive is about the legalities of D8 THC: check out our legalities page for further details. That being said, Delta 8 THC was made legal by H.R. 2: The Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, commonly referred to as the 2018 Farm Bill. The bill amended D8 THC’s legality when it made all derivatives, isomers and cannabinoids of hemp legal–all but Delta 9 THC.
Up until the passing of the 2018 bill, D8 THC was illegal as a controlled substance named in the Controlled Substances Act. However, once the Farm Bill legalized all hemp isomers, derivatives and hemp cannabinoids, H.R.2 specifically included text removing all confusion between laws amending the Controlled Substances Act excluding Delta 8 THC from hemp.
While D8 THC is federally legal, it still remains illegal in a few states. We’ve compiled a list of states where Delta 8 is currently legal HERE. Unfortunately, some states specifically exclude D8 THC or have laws barring all cannabinoid, isomers and derivatives of hemp illegal.
Creation of Delta 8 THC
The driving factor in the cost of Delta 8 THC, is the fact that although it exists naturally in cannabis hemp and marijuana, it does so in very small quantities that require robust extraction methods and operations. However, these methods are non-synthetic, natural processes already used in other areas of cannabis. As simple as using a lighter to burn cannabis, to as complex as the extractions used to create concentrates.
However, with Delta 8THC sharing a similar molecular compound structure with several neighboring* cannabinoids, plant geneticists are able to modify these neighboring compounds via chemical reactions into D8 THC. Contrary to popular belief, these neighboring cannabinoids are not “synthetic cannabinoids” but rather, conversions and derivatives are more appropriate names as these compounds not only exist naturally, but naturally turn into one another with application of heat, light and even just over time. In fact, scientifically, all cannabinoids start as CBGA and naturally over time synthesize in other cannabinoids during the maturation of the cannabis plant. Interesting right? A conversation of THCA to Delta 9 THC with heat application is a common conversion performed at home by anyone who ‘smokes’ marujuana.
Although this does not mean everyone who engages in recreational cannabis is a scientist, it does exemplify that conversions are an integral and palpable part of the cannabis industry as a whole and should not garner any fear from any general source.
More importantly, thanks to these conversions and reactions ability to create rare cannabinoids such as canabinol (CBN), cannabichromene (CBC) Delta 8 THC, and even the common Delta 9 THC, we’re able to produce them more abundantly and cost efficient than straightforward extraction.
That being said, since D8 THC is extracted in a lab, there should always be a cause for concern of where you’re getting your extracts. At Project, your D8 THC is being created safely with all solvents, acids, reagents and bases being thoroughly and properly removed from the end product.
Delta 8 THC Effects
Although the effects of D8 THC can vary person to person, the average experience can be preconceived by imagining the combining of the best effects of CBD and Delta 9 THC without the psychoactive dysfunction. Delta 8 THC is a natural mood booster, granting a calmer, less stressed and more motivated euphoric vibration.
With proper dosing, D8 THC users reported feeling far more functional than using the D9 THC counterpart. Users also revear D8 THC as the quintessential medicinal property of cannabis as a whole, with several top agencies prophesying D8 will eclipse CBD as the leading medicinal property of cannabis.
When vaporized and inhaled the effects of Delta 8 THC generally appear within 20 minutes and will last as long as 5 hours with peak effects ranging from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on the tolerance of the individual. Naturally, the higher the purity of D8 THC, meaning fewer cannabinoids (like CBD, CBC and CBG), the quicker the peak onset and the higher the intensity of effects.
When consumed orally, Delta 8 THC expands its peak to anywhere between 45 minutes to 4 hours, with effects lasting as long as 12 hours. However, edible dosage is harder to gauge in some instances and users should always avoid operating machinery after consumption.
Some negative effects, although rare, can occur: including upset stomach, drowsiness, dry mouth, red eyes, and headache.
Onset of D8 Effects
The onset effects of Delta 8 THC will vary depending on the method of consumption and the tolerance inherent in each individual. However, the onset effects are typically delayed slightly more than Delta 9 THC effects. Keep in mind also, the level of compounds present and the purity levels of D8 THC also seemingly play a role.
Project observations show that a pure D8 THC vape will be felt more immediately or within a few minutes faster than a D8 THC oil. Project has also noticed: when a presence of 20% or more CBD is in an extract, it can delay the onset notice and onset effects by as much as 20 minutes. When ingesting D8 THC, a consumer may not peak or reach peak effects for up to 1 hour and sometimes as long as 4 hours depending on the user. In contrast, Delta 9 THC edibles may peak anywhere from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours. It should be noted, digesting Delta 8 THC (like Delta 9 THC) is harder to predict.
Dosing Delta 8 THC
Thanks to the delayed onset effects of Delta 8 THC, some users will need a few days or a few uses to determine the perfect dose moving forward. Like most medicinal and recreational products, doses are highly individualized and generally are never completely tied ot any specific physical catergorey or feature: in example, age, sex, weight, etc. Thus, regardless of your size, it’s prudent to begin with a lower dosage and work your tolerance up. You can always take more but you can’t take less once you’ve dosed.
When taking a typical oral dosage of Delta 8 THC, users will take between a 10 and 14mg dosage. For comparison, those who need a 40mg or above dosage, tend to be heavy recreational cannabis (Delta 9 THC) users. It should be understood, 10mg can make a palpable difference in effects for some people. Project generally recommends to not exceed the 10mg’s in advancing your dosage.
In our own experience, a typical vape dosage is about 1-3 second puffs. Unless the user is a heavy recreational Delta 9 THC user, we find it typically unnecessary to take any more than this.
If you’re a consistent recreational user of Delta 9 THC, we’ve typically recommended our new users to start with a 1:1 dosage. Since then, many have reported Delta 8 THC begging about 75% as potent as Delta 9 THC, but our users and Project personally are ready to concede that figure, as the differentiating effects between molecules are indirectly comparable. What we’ve found is that potency varies from individual to individual. And largely those individuals who are heavy recreational Delta 9 THC users, blame the lack of fogginess and ‘stone’ as the culprit of Delta 8 THC’s rep of less potent. The case is rather: Delta 8 THC ability to calm anxieties and center itself around a more ‘body feel’ is overlooked. In terms of these positive effects, Project has consulted with our consumers and they’ve expressed Delta 8 THC’s superior potency over Delta 9 THC, especially in terms of edible. That is why we recommend you mirror the intake of Delta 8 THC with your typical recreational use of Delta 9 THC, 1:1. Work up your dosage based on your initial response to Delta 8 THC.
How Long Do D8 THC Effects Last?
The length of D8 THC effects will always vary person to person based on the individual. However, as a ballpark average, we see high purity vapes having a lasting effect anywhere from 1-5 hours, with tinctures and edibles lasting anywhere from 5-12 hours. Obviously, larger doses can create longer lasting effects, but it can also build your tolerance and cause you to eventually inhibit their length.
It can be difficult to really pinpoint when the effects completely come and go. Delta 8 THC is more mild than traditional cannabis, so it can be hard for the individual to identify the baseline, especially at first, before and after taking D8THC.
This is especially the case where individuals enjoy the boosted mood of Delta 8 THC, versus the high you would get from cannabis. The mood change can be sometimes difficult to notice, since life is impossible to predict and generally the natura onset of D8THC can go unnoticed. We’ve actually witnessed in tests and sampling how the user will say they feel “no change in mood” but then someone they are with informs them they have been more pleasant to be around, even in just the last few minutes.
It can be difficult to judge the length of the effects as well in regards to a ‘peak’ which can lead to some users dismissing the elevated mood boosts above the baseline. However, when users then stop taking D8THC, they gradually phase out of this opinion and revert to consumer D8THC again.
Delta 8 THC Safety
Since Delta 8 THC has to be created in a lab, the premier safety concerns surround the lab procedures and extractions. Mainly, to be conducted by a correctly trained and supremely qualified chemist.
When it comes to acute dosage, safety is paramount. That being said, there is no known lethal limit or overdose limit with Delta 8 THC. There are some concerns however, when eating Delta 8 THC. When consuming more than one individual's needs, it can induce extreme paranoia and anxiety, as seen in nightmare edible stories of Delta 9 THC. Our advice: go easy on the edibles until you know your proper dosage. You can always take more, not less.
Note: there currently is no long-term safety data for Delta 8 THC.
Tolerance to Delta 8 THC
There currently exists a lack in human studies on Delta 8 THC, however our experiences have shown a gradual tolerance build similar in comparison to Delta 9 THC. THC tolerance will build gradually over time and can be exponentially grown from overuse. Always monitor your dosage accordingly to keep your tolerance effective.
There have been some reports that people’s tolerances to D8THC have built quicker than D9THC, but nearly every user who reported this was also an active D9THC user. Not only does their body have experience with THC, but they treated their intake of D8THC like D9THC, starting with a dosage too large or overconfident.
Comparing D8 and D9 THC results can damage your expectations in tolerance. People generally consume D9 THC to feel a ‘high’ or immediate change in consciousness, where D8 THC produces a far different effect. These are all factors that have to be considered when building your tolerance or expectations of D8 THC.
Delta 8 THC Metabolites
Delta 8 THC has been thought to contain the same metabolites as Delta 9 THC with one exception: the double bond is changed when applicable. However, currently studies are not available with the exact metabolites of Delta 8 THC. The sole study that even mentioned metabolites was only performed on mice.
Project’s initial consumer observations suggest the metabolites of Delta 8 THC are longer lasting than its Delta 9 THC counterpart, whose metabolites are weaker and less lasting, especially in terms of edibles.
Will I Pass A Drug Test on Delta 8 THC?
Unfortunately not, as Delta 8 THC metabolites are too similar (the exact molecular structure) as the psycho-inducing Delta 9 THC. Thus triggering a positive test for THC marijuana.
Our tests were conducted by at home drug testing kits on our fellow employees who only used Delta 8 THC exclusively. We also sent one employee to the police station for their official drug report and all tested positive for THC in their systems.
Passing a drug test as an active user of Delta 8 THC is not unheard of however. We ourselves are not personally able to verify these reports as our own first hand data suggests otherwise.
Shelf Life of Delta 8 THC
As of today, the longest test we’ve been capable of conducting on Delta 8 THC oil potency is roughly 4 months. Believe it or not, the oil tested better four months later. Upon product completion, our tests revealed a 95% D8THC level. Four months later, the tests proved a 98% D8THC in month four.
That being said, these tests were conducted within normal testing variance ranges and should not necessarily be taken to mean that your Delta 8 THC product will become more potent over time. At Project, we believe anything is possible, and we like to think of Delta 8 THC in a similar realm as fine wine, but the likely conclusion is that since everything remained unchanged for 4 months the test had a minor variance increase.
For those curious: the oil was stored in individually placed syringes in clamshell packaging secure from direct light (artificial or natural sunlight) indoors with a room temperature of roughly 72 degrees fahrenheit.
How Definitive is the Data on Delta 8 THC?
Simply put, there is not a lot of long term data on Delta 8 THC to begin with. Consequently, we can’t say it’s super definitive just yet. However, nearly every of the 113 cannabinoids besides Delta 9 THC and CBD, lack long term studies like D8THC. But as long as we extract naturally and organically, we can rely on the bennelavent nature of cannabis products in general.
We do know a considerable amount about D8THC to affirm it’s a naturally occuring cannabinoid often found in very small quantities of flower and extracts. And while D8THC products may deliver up to 100% in concentrations, no human being has overdosed from the cannabis plant.
Delta 8 THC has been safely used in several cannabis markets for a couple of years now. However, those products typically used D8THC in a pairing of D9THC instead of CBD. Obviously, this will produce different effects and tests which are generally more intense since D9THC has psychoactive effects. While there are slightly difference processes, D8THC is always organically and naturally sourced and with little to no psychoactive effects and being derived from Hemp, certain qualities have to be met, which in turn work as a definitive road map to the calm, mood-boosting, safe effects of D8THC.
We as a company are relying also on the anecdotal feedback we have received from our customers and employees who rave about the calming and mood-boosting effects of D8THC. It’s one of the guiding reasons we are so excited to be working with D8 THC. We believe the uncertainty revolving around D8 THC, is similar to the uncertainty that one plagued CBD.
We trust in the overwhelmingly positive feed on D8 THC, especially how we have seen in comparison to CBD, which garnered far more skepticism and reluctant data.
Observed Potential of Delta 8 THC / Areas to Study
Legally we are obliged to never say Delta 8 THC is a medical treatment for any specific condition, but we can relay the enthusiasm our customers repeatedly tell us when using our products to treat their conditions. It’s precisely from the large amounts of positive feedback in these areas, Delta 8 THC continues to be at the forefront of medicinal studies as the next potential name in medicinal cannabis.
Products on this site contain a value of 0.3% or less Δ9THC (or no more than 0.3% Δ9THC).
